01Personal introduction

My story

Portrait of Piyumi Pramodya in a black blazer

From roots in Sri Lanka to building a new chapter in my professional journey in New Zealand, I was shaped by a continuous desire to learn and grow while creating meaningful connections. Starting my career very young in Sri Lanka, where my early career years in administration, human resources, teaching, and coordinating roles helped me develop my communication, interpersonal, and technical skills. Successfully completing my bachelor’s in international management and business with a First-Class Honours degree alongside my work experience laid the initial foundation to progress into business development, account management, and strategic managerial roles, allowing me to strengthen my relationship building and leadership skills.

A pivotal chapter in my career unfolded when I joined the digital marketing sector while it was still booming, and I got the opportunity to work with a wide range of brands both in local and global contexts. During the early stages of my digital marketing career, I was able to develop strategic partnerships, learn the evolving trends and technical skills, and assist in expanding an online travel platform and successfully onboard over 30 hotels while managing the sales and account management teams as a Manager of Strategic Relationships. I have also had the opportunity to work as an Account Manager for an internationally acclaimed digital marketing agency specialising in the travel and hospitality industry with over 1,200 clients, where I got the exposure to work with well-renowned brands such as Ascott, Minor Hotels, and Pan Pacific. Managing over 40 clients while consistently contributing to revenue growth with new sales and upselling digital solutions was a challenging yet rewarding experience. Therefore, my professional experience of over 12 years enhanced my networking ability, commercial knowledge, international exposure, and passion for hospitality.

I currently work in Auckland as a Digital Marketing Consultant for a diversified group spanning construction, digital services, and product ventures, further developing my digital marketing and AI skills while understanding New Zealand marketing and business strategies. My role allows me to synergise digital innovation, strategic thinking, marketing skills, relationship management and performance optimisation. In parallel, I’m also studying a Master of Management at ICL Graduate Business School, where I’m gaining theoretical and practical insights into contemporary management and leadership strategies connecting the practical experience with an in-depth understanding of New Zealand’s business landscape.

Reflecting on my journey, every step of the way has shaped the professional I am today: growth-oriented, commercially focused and striving for better. I aspire to build on my experience along with the learnings from my Master’s program to become a strategic leader who is not just good at the job but inspires, creates value and makes a long-term impact.

03Career aspirations

What drives me

Driven by transforming challenges into meaningful business opportunities while deepening the understanding about business and emerging trends, I’m passionate about creating meaningful strategic connections coupled with my curiosity to learn, which has shaped my career across account management, business development, and digital marketing. What energises me the most is the opportunity to create measurable impact while continuously learning and evolving as a professional.

Desired role

Strategic leadership

My ultimate career goal is to move into a strategic leadership role in Account Management or Digital Strategy in a New Zealand organisation where I can leverage my experience working with a diverse portfolio of international brands, gain a deeper understanding of the New Zealand business culture by assuming greater responsibility for strategic planning, strengthening client relationships and improving business performance. I envision myself driving the direction of an organisation through digital innovation, people-centred leadership, and data-driven insights to create long-term value.

Industry preference

Travel & hospitality

While I’d like to explore different industries, my personal preference is inclined towards the travel and hospitality industry where customer experience, creativity and business strategy strongly align. I believe my recent experience working closely with a wide range of leading hospitality brands combined with my love for travel and my roots in Sri Lanka, the heart of tourism and hospitality in South Asia, has ignited a passion for this industry.

Long-term direction

Strategic leadership in New Zealand

Professional achievement for me is more than just a title. It is about establishing relationships of trust, empowering teams and challenging ideologies and making an impact on the organisations and customers I serve. My goal for the next five years is to gain the local market knowledge while building on my past experience to progress to a strategic leadership role, and my Master of Management program can support me in guiding for stronger ethical judgements, strategic thinking and in-depth organisational understanding.

Therefore, I have a clear direction to leverage my experience, develop strategic leadership skills, learn about the culture, and strengthen the technical skills while making use of the opportunities to create a meaningful sustainable impact.

04Self-evaluation

Knowing my strengths, owning my growth

Guided by Whetten and Cameron’s management skills framework, I reflected on my personal, interpersonal and group management capabilities, drawing on professional experiences to identify my strengths and areas for development.

StrengthsCapability · evidence · reflection

01Relationship Management and Networking
Evidence
My last work experience back in Sri Lanka involved managing over 40 high-value client accounts with regular performance meetings and handling challenges of performance drops, customer complaints, and team pressure while maintaining 96% client retention. Represented the company at international trade shows and company-sponsored global events in Singapore and the UAE, networking with many industry professionals.
Reflection
This exposure has helped me develop competence in building trust in professional relationships and strengthening the ability to network and cross-cultural communication skills. This will be a critical trait to any role I take up, as it helps to build sustainable partnerships, but it requires continuous engagement to develop such sustaining meaningful partnerships, trust and understanding of diverse stakeholder expectations.
02Problem Solving and Business Development
Evidence
Acquiring over 25 high-value clients annually, reaching the quarterly targets and achieving over 1.2 million USD in sales and being awarded the best performer in Sales/Account Management/PR in the year 2025 for supporting revenue targets and identifying new business opportunities.
Reflection
This showcases the competency to identify loopholes, provide solutions strategically, and manage the accounts while recognising commercial opportunities. I aim to build on this strength, particularly to contribute to strategic business goals and long-term growth.
03Communication and Team Collaboration
Evidence
Leading teams, client presentations, sales negotiations, stakeholder engagement and teaching shaped my skills in communication and team collaboration.
Reflection
Client-facing experiences and teaching have tremendously helped me in improving clear communication, confidence, active listening, and engagement with diverse audiences. I aim to use these skills in my future leadership roles to foster team development and share knowledge and promote collaboration and effective teamwork.

Growth areasLimitation · learning · action

01Team Empowerment and Delegation
Limitation
Leading small teams allowed me to coordinate responsibilities and was personally held accountable for outcomes.
Learning
Effective leadership transcends taking personal responsibility to develop team autonomy and ownership.
Action
Through team projects and future leadership opportunities aiming to work on constructive feedback, delegation, coaching and mentoring. Connect on a deeper level with the teams through open communication, transparency and a supportive environment where everyone in the team feels valued and empowered.
02Change Management and Organisational Leadership
Limitation
I have adapted to various industries and different technologies but most of it has been around achieving commercial targets rather than organisational change.
Learning
Adapting on a personal level to learn how to cope with change as it helps teams through organisational change and uncertainty.
Action
Understand the application of change management theories and look for mentor support and opportunities to involve in organisational changes.
03Cross-Cultural Adaptability and NZ Business Integration
Limitation
Now gaining professional exposure in the New Zealand business landscape after building much of my career which is more than a decade of experience in Sri Lanka.
Learning
My experience abroad in my home country helped me build my adaptability, but I now see the need to gain an in-depth understanding of the leadership styles, stakeholder expectations and business culture in New Zealand, which is a key to adding sustainable value to any organisation in this country.
Action
Develop professional connections, solicit input from mentors or local peers, and integrate the Master of Management knowledge gained to enhance NZ work experience and achieve the career goals effectively.
05Critical self-evaluation

Reflect. Evaluate. Evolve.

01

Reflect

Looking back at my professional journey through the lens of Whetten and Cameron’s management skills framework has helped me discover my strengths and own my areas for growth. Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, identifying strategic business opportunities and managing client relationships have shaped my strengths, while I admit that professional achievements don’t necessarily guarantee readiness for senior leadership as team empowerment, adaptability and change management also play vital roles in shaping an effective leader.

02

Evaluate

An important discovery is that while it’s a good practice to take ownership of getting things done in client management it may hinder opportunities for empowerment and delegation.

Additionally, the ability to adapt to various industries or working conditions doesn’t necessarily allow to drive positive organisational change. Furthermore, highlighting the significance of self-awareness including the understanding of how cultural expectations may influence communication, collaboration and effectiveness in leadership essentially after moving to New Zealand recently.

03

Evolve

The self-reflection evaluation provided insights on shifting my focus from individual performance to helping to develop teams while influencing a broader organisational change. I believe my practical experience and my Master of Management study, and its focus on constructive feedback, will be a catalyst for improving skills in empowering and delegation while leading positive change and building effective stakeholder relationships within the New Zealand business ecosystem.

Key learning

Being an effective leader is more than achieving team and personal targets. It requires self-awareness to question comfortable behaviours, the ability to empower others and the capacity to adapt leadership practices to different individuals and organisational settings.

06Digital professional identity

My professional presence

I help organisations strengthen client relationships, identify growth opportunities and translate marketing insights into commercial outcomes.
