Your digital footprint speaks before you do

The impression we give the professionals we meet can start long before the first handshake.

I have realised that our online presence is a relevant aspect in our professional identity especially in the contemporary world where a simple internet search can show more than a formal introduction. I used to think that digital professionalism had to do with an up-to-date LinkedIn profile and showcasing achievements and looking professional online. However, the Business Ethics and Digital Footprint lectures made me think outside the box and take into account the responsibilities that come with being digitally present.

Among the insights, one which particularly resonated was the way that social media has changed the landscape of how the business communicates and the key concerns of privacy, trust and accuracy of information. It made me realise how vulnerable it is to be affected by professional reputation through what we share, the way we communicate and even the information we make public.

This learning is important and relevant in the world of digital marketing as well. While I recognise how the online world can influence perceptions about an audience, I had not specifically focused on my own identity online. The lecture made me think about how significant it is to build a positive digital profile without being inauthentic and not sharing information recklessly.

It has been a privilege to use that understanding in the creation of this ePortfolio. Thus, using the valuable returns of digitalisation and using it the right way to our benefit should be our responsibility as professionals. For instance, this ePortfolio itself is an example of showcasing my experience and competence, valuable projects to create that professionally responsible digital footprint with the use of technology to portray the person I am professionally.

Therefore, in this digital world, it is crucial that all professionals should responsibly portray their authentic self to ensure the online communication aligns with the professional qualities that they want to be associated with. The best lesson I have learnt through this lecture is to create our own brand, be accountable and consistent wherever we are visible.
